Feature and Follow Friday (8)

Hello everyone! It's another Feature & Follow Friday! It's been a blast meeting everyone and following so many blogs. We hope this week will be just as successful as last week!

Feature and Follow Friday is a weekly meme hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee.

This week's question is...

Q: What is a deal breaker for you in a book? For example, do you abhor love triangles? Or can’t deal with bad editing?

Well, I basically answered this question last week. Basically, I hate triangles because they always make everyone look bad, especially the person in the middle! The characters always have to be "dumbed down" to make the triangle ~work. It's so ridiculous. I challenge anyone to find an amazing triangle where everyone stays in character and there are no shitty plot devices. The other deal breakers that I mentioned were cheating, romance overtaking characterization, romanticized abusive male "heroes", and unnecessary plot twists/cliffhangers.

I also feel the need to mention editing. While some books are huge and long because they're fantasy epics (I love you A Song of Ice and Fire), there are some books that could benefit from being SHORTER. If you can get to the point of the story by cutting out 50-100 pages, do it! I mean why drag out the story any longer? You're not trying to BS a college paper to make that page limit! LOL! For example, Anna and The French Kiss, could have benefited from being about 100 pages shorter...but instead the author wrote in some ridiculous plot point just to keep the story going on longer! WHY?! WHY! Just stop!

I also cannot stand when authors use big words for no reason (congrats you can use a thesaurus!) and when their stories have awkward and just plain awful grammar. Not everyone can be a writer peeps! (I'm so mean...no really I am! ;) )

Let me know what you think in the comments! Or if you want, you can just say hi!

  1. Love triangles can be bad, especially if they have no purpose for being there other than to be there.

Bad editing has to be really really bad and there constantly for me to get upset with the book. Normally it's just minor errors that has me wishing I could've been the proofreader!

Unnecessary big words? I see it sometimes, but not a whole lot. I occasionally like having to look up a word to add to my own knowledge!

  2. I've read a series that used unnecessary big words.. it was distracting at first but I chugged through and loved the series.

  3. I agree with editing and I know it's not the author's fault (well, unless it's self-published...) but it can be a deal breaker for me!

Big words I don't think I've every seen unless it was part of the story line. I kind of appreciate them, as long as it feels natural. It helps me strengthen my vocabulary.

  4. You make a good point about love triangles, though I don't mind them. Editing is a popular answer this week. If everyone hates it so much, the question is why people keep publishing books with editing errors...Hmm...:D Old follower. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  6. I agree with you, I get so annoyed when a author uses big words just to look smart. However, You can't really blame bad grammar on the author, because the author job is to write the book, its not their job to make sure every page has perfect grammar, that's the editors job.

  8. Agreed! Love triangles can work *if* done correctly but if not it can be a disaster.

  10. I hate authors who overuse a thesaurus too. If the big words don't fit with the narrative or characters, then it's very grating. And I think love triangles are pretty cliche. They CAN be done well (like in Twelfth Night!) but generally they detract from the characters and plot, as far as I'm concerned.

  11. I really don't like it when a story is dragged on forever either. It will usually make me bored and I'll feel the urge to just stop reading.

Once upon a time, there were two sisters -Susan and Shauna - who were moved and mesmerized by stories through any medium, since they were teeny tiny. This passion stayed with them throughout adulthood, and after becoming even more enthralled with Young Adult fiction in recent times (and some Adult & MG!) they decided they just had to open up their own book blog and share their enthusiasm with the world, or well, to anyone who would listen.
